Pulitzer Finalist Sounds the Alarm on California’s Vanishing Coast and Offers a Way Forward
Discussion and book Signing at the Middlebury Institute on March 6
MONTEREY-CA – On March 6, celebrated environmental journalist Rosanna Xia will discuss her new book, California Against the Sea: Visions for Our Vanishing Coastline at a free community event in downtown Monterey.
For the last hundred years, California’s 1,200-mile Pacific coastline has enjoyed relative calm due to a rare confluence of atmospheric factors. But shifting tides exacerbated by climate change are bringing this serene century to a screeching close with higher-than-high tides and city-leveling storms.
In this talk, Xia will dive deep into the stakes, stopgaps, and potential paths forward for the coast that 27 million people call home.
Xia is currently an environment reporter for the Los Angeles Times, specializing in stories about the coast and ocean. She was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2020 for explanatory reporting, and her coverage of a toxic dumpsite in the deep ocean has been featured in the “Best American Science and Nature Writing” anthology.
A reception and book signing will follow the discussion.
