SUMMARY:Moonlight and Mirrors: Pianist Gwendolyn Mok
DESCRIPTION:French composers Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel\, both creating in the Impressionist style\, were often viewed as competitors. Critics regarded Ravel as a lesser imitator of the older Debussy. But is that true?\nOn Sunday\, March 15\, piano virtuoso Dr. Gwendolyn Mok will perform selected compositions side-by-side\, each on a similar topic. This will allow you to make your own judgments. How are the composers similar? How are they different? Does Ravel really try to imitate Debussy\, or does he have his own distinct style?\nThe Moonlight and Mirrors recital will feature Debussy’s Moonlight Sonata and Ravel’s Miroirs\, among other pieces. Dr. Mok will use the piano and visual aids to help you understand and appreciate how the two composers differed and how they were similar even while composing in the same Impressionist style.\nOur Musician Series performances are held in a smaller\, more intimate venue\, bringing the musicians up close with the audience. Tickets for this season’s recitals have sold out quickly\, leaving some people disappointed. An early purchase is encouraged!\nCall Cabrillo Box Office at 831-479-6154 or visit https://tinyurl.com/moonlightandmirrors.

DESCRIPTION:Battle of the Bartenders 2026: Mathew Wins First‑Round Tiebreaker in Carmel‑by‑the‑Sea \nCarmel‑by‑the‑Sea\, CA — The 2026 Battle of the Bartenders opened Monday night with a dramatic first‑round showdown at The Links Club in Carmen Plaza\, where Matthew Salazer of Links Club emerged victorious over Tomas Casas Ramirez  of Barmel after a blindfolded tiebreaker. \nThe three‑round contest tested creativity\, technique and improvisation. The final round was a surprise challenge — each competitor had to build a cocktail using Jameson and a pantry of mixers. The panel of judges declared the contest tied after regular judging\, sending the finalists to a blindfolded tiebreaker in which Mathew prevailed\, two‑to‑one. \n“The energy in the room was electric\,” said a Battle producer\, April Montgomery. “Both bartenders pushed boundaries and showcased what modern craft bartending is all about. Congratulations to Matthew on a well‑earned win.” \nUpcoming rounds and ticketing\n– The next Battle of the Bartenders face‑off takes place Monday\, March 9 at The Links Club in Carmel Plaza. SUMMARY:The Future Tense: What’s Left for Human Language Learners? with Professor Gabriel Guillén\, Middlebury Institute of International Studies
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 25\, 2026\n6:30 PM\, Harrison Memorial Library Reading Room \nFireside Chats at the Library \nCarmel Public Library Foundation \nThe Future Tense: What’s Left for Human Language Learners?\nwith Professor Gabriel Guillén\, Middlebury Institute of International Studies \nWith AI translating speech in real time\, why learn another language at all? In this fireside chat\, we’ll challenge assumptions and explore urgent questions: What does it mean to learn a language in the age of AI? Can machines teach us empathy\, intercultural competence\, or the skills to connect across differences? And in a world shaped by climate migration and global instability\, what roles do human language learners still play? Join us for a conversation on the future of language education\, for formal and informal learners alike\, and whether it’s time to let go\, double down\, or reimagine it altogether.

SUMMARY:Exhibition - After The Human. After Technology
DESCRIPTION:Today\, as technology increasingly shapes how we see\, think\, and act\, it becomes urgent to ask: what is the role of technology in art? How does technological advancement—particularly artificial intelligence—reshape human society\, ethics\, and historical trajectories? How are visual perception and aesthetic judgment reshaped through technological mediation? What is the evolving role of human imagination within algorithmic systems? And what consequences does this acceleration carry for our environment?\nAfter the Human\, After Technology is a curated exhibition that examines how contemporary artists respond to a world increasingly shaped by technological acceleration. The exhibition brings together artists who approach these questions from different yet interconnected positions. Highlighted artists include David Bowen\, whose work operates at the intersection of art\, technology\, and climate\, transforming real-time environmental data into generative systems that question how technology mediates our relationship with the natural world; David Aston\, whose practice examines the ethical implications of artificial intelligence and predictive technologies and their influence on human society; and Alana Balagot\, whose kinetic and interactive works explore shifts in visual aesthetics by merging classical illusion with contemporary electronic and machinic systems.\nExhibition from Feb 8th – March 8th\, 2026 with opening reception on Feb 8th\, 2026 14:00 – 17:00\nRSVP to 650-796-2421 for private view appointment.
