SUMMARY:A Just Transition for Whom?
DESCRIPTION:To avert the worst impacts of climate change\, a transition away from fossil fuels is necessary. However\, what this transition looks like and what would make a transition “just\,” remain open questions. What workers are missing from  “green” economy discussions? What role do workers play in the fight for  a future without fossil fuels? How can workers and communities ensure the transition is “just”?  \nJoin the Center for Labor and Community for a conversation with Dr. J. Mijin Cha (author of A Just Transition for All: Workers and Communities for a Carbon-Free Future\, MIT Press) and Saket Soni (author of The Great Escape: A True Story of Forced Labor and Immigrant Dreams in America\, Algonquin Books)\, moderated by Labor Notes’ Labor-Climate Organizer\, Keith Brower-Brown\, for a timely discussion of these questions and more. This event will bring together academics\, labor organizers\, and workers from across the region to think together about how to move beyond a fuel-based economy. A reception and book signing will be held after the discussion.

There will be 28 performances\, including shows at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. \nThe show will be directed by SCS Artistic Director\, Charles Pasternak and will star SCS favorite Mike Ryan as Scrooge. The performance will be filled with music\, with Luke Shepherd serving as the production’s music director and sound designer. Carols will be sung throughout the show. \nTicket prices range from $20 to $60. The show is 90 minutes\, no intermission. Speakers will also discuss how current vineyard growing techniques influence wine flavor\, with a focus on soil health and canopy management. \n  \nHear from members of the wine grape community who grow on the Central Coast and practice a range of viticulture methods including organic\, regenerative\, and sustainable vineyard management and winemaking. \n  \nPanelist Speakers include: \n\nPrudy Foxx\, Foxx Viticulture\, organic\, vineyard to the bottle\nAbbey Crystal\, Ken Swegles\, Cole Thomas – Skyline Vit consulting\, Madson wines\nKelly Mulville\, Paicines ranch\, regenerative viticulture in San Benito County\nSteve and Pam Storrs\, Storrs winery\, organic and regenerative\n\n  \nAdditionally\, the UCSC Center for Agroecology is exploring the development of an organic vineyard and potentially a campus-linked winery where UCSC can be the site of hands-on educational experiences and applied research to support the development of efficient and sustainable organic viticulture techniques in coastal vineyards. \n  \nTo support the planning of this initiative we recently sent out an online survey to grower and winery members of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Janet C. ”Jenny” Broome\, Assistant Adjunct Professor for the UCSC Environmental Studies Department and Center for Agroecology\, will discuss the results of this survey: “Summary of the recent fall 2024 Santa Cruz Mountains Wine Grape Growers and Wineries Research Needs Survey.” \n  \nThe event will finish with a wine tasting of local wines made from vineyards employing a range of management practices. Come sip and share your thoughts. \n  \nPresented by the Friends of the UCSC Farm & Garden. Members receive a 10% discount on workshop costs. The Monterey Institute for Research in Astronomy hosts this incredible event on Hospitality Island in the lakebed. Telescopes of all shapes and sizes and astronomers are on hand to show some of the natural phenomenon happening above. All ages are welcome to join! \nWant to learn more about MIRA? Check out their website and donate to their cause! \nPlease Note: \n\nPLEASE park in the dirt lot near the restrooms and try to keep your headlights off of the island. When you approach\, turn your phone screen light all the way down and use that or use a red light. Flashlights and bright screens will mean another 20 minutes before everyone’s eyes adjust!\nSecurity is on site and guests are not permitted to wander to other parts of the facility during this event.\nCamping guests are welcome to join!\nSpectators are asked to park on the perimeter of the island. If leaving or arriving during the event\, try to keep headlights off the group as much as possible.\nChildren of all ages are welcome\, please be careful of tripping hazards and obstacles in the dark\nGuests are welcome to bring chairs or blankets.

There will be 28 performances\, including shows at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. \nThe show will be directed by SCS Artistic Director\, Charles Pasternak and will star SCS favorite Mike Ryan as Scrooge. The performance will be filled with music\, with Luke Shepherd serving as the production’s music director and sound designer. Carols will be sung throughout the show. \nTicket prices range from $20 to $60. The show is 90 minutes\, no intermission.
