SUMMARY:2026 Battle of the Bartenders Round 1 is in the Books!
DESCRIPTION:Battle of the Bartenders 2026: Mathew Wins First‑Round Tiebreaker in Carmel‑by‑the‑Sea \nCarmel‑by‑the‑Sea\, CA — The 2026 Battle of the Bartenders opened Monday night with a dramatic first‑round showdown at The Links Club in Carmen Plaza\, where Matthew Salazer of Links Club emerged victorious over Tomas Casas Ramirez  of Barmel after a blindfolded tiebreaker. \nThe three‑round contest tested creativity\, technique and improvisation. Round One featured an open-preference challenge. Tomas introduced “Pour Sippin’\,” a rum-based cocktail\, while Matthew presented “The Tipsy Tourist\,” an original creation utilizing Lalo Blanco tequila.  Round Two required bartenders to work with a specified flavor profile of Absolute Tabasco infused vodka.  Tomas responded with “Sweat it Out\,” a bold take on a Bloody Mary; Mathew countered with “Dill it a Double” a vodka cocktail featuring lemon\, cucumber and dill. The final round was a surprise challenge — each competitor had to build a cocktail using Jameson and a pantry of mixers. The panel of judges declared the contest tied after regular judging\, sending the finalists to a blindfolded tiebreaker in which Mathew prevailed\, two‑to‑one. \n“The energy in the room was electric\,” said a Battle producer\, April Montgomery. “Both bartenders pushed boundaries and showcased what modern craft bartending is all about. Congratulations to Matthew on a well‑earned win.” \nUpcoming rounds and ticketing\n– The next Battle of the Bartenders face‑off takes place Monday\, March 9 at The Links Club in Carmel Plaza. Matty Caseiro from 7th & Dolores will compete against Liz Brown from Il Fornaio.  This battle is Sponsored by Whistle Pig Whiskey.\n– Tickets are available for $35 online at www.linksclubgolf.com and for $45 at the door the night of the event Guests receive 6 tastings of the drinks\, curated snacks at the event and the chance to vote for their favorite bartender each round.\n– The Carmel-by-the-Sea championship will be held Monday\, March 16 at The Links Club; and sponsored by Teely Whiskey.  The champion will advance to the Grand Championship in November.

SUMMARY:Moonlight and Mirrors: Pianist Gwendolyn Mok
DESCRIPTION:French composers Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel\, both creating in the Impressionist style\, were often viewed as competitors. Critics regarded Ravel as a lesser imitator of the older Debussy. But is that true?\nOn Sunday\, March 15\, piano virtuoso Dr. Gwendolyn Mok will perform selected compositions side-by-side\, each on a similar topic. This will allow you to make your own judgments. How are the composers similar? How are they different? Does Ravel really try to imitate Debussy\, or does he have his own distinct style?\nThe Moonlight and Mirrors recital will feature Debussy’s Moonlight Sonata and Ravel’s Miroirs\, among other pieces. Dr. Mok will use the piano and visual aids to help you understand and appreciate how the two composers differed and how they were similar even while composing in the same Impressionist style.\nOur Musician Series performances are held in a smaller\, more intimate venue\, bringing the musicians up close with the audience. Tickets for this season’s recitals have sold out quickly\, leaving some people disappointed. An early purchase is encouraged!\nCall Cabrillo Box Office at 831-479-6154 or visit https://tinyurl.com/moonlightandmirrors.

SUMMARY:Artificial Intelligence: The New Language of Power and Possibility with Professor Emeritus Terry Winograd\, Stanford University
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, March 25\, 2026  \n7:00 PM\, Carpenter Hall at Sunset Center\, Carmel\n\nCommunity Night with the Library\n\nThe Carmel Public Library Foundation presents The Power of Language\n\nArtificial Intelligence: The New Language of Power and Possibility with Professor Emeritus Terry Winograd\, Stanford University\n\nArtificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the way we communicate\, work\, and understand the world. Join pioneering AI researcher\, Professor Terry Winograd for a timely conversation about how language\, thought\, and technology intersect in the age of artificial intelligence. Winograd’s early work helped shape the field of natural language processing and inspired generations of researchers. In this engaging program\, he’ll explore how AI systems use language\, how that shapes human understanding\, and why ethical reflection is more important than ever. AI is more than just code—it’s a system of communication\, influence\, and possibility. Understanding it is essential to engaging with the present and shaping the future. \n\nTerry Winograd is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at Stanford University\, where he founded the Human-Computer Interaction Group. A pioneer in artificial intelligence and natural language understanding\, he completed his PhD at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab and co-authored the influential book Understanding Computers and Cognition. He is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)—the world’s largest and most prestigious professional organization for computing professionals—and the Stanford Human-Centered AI Institute. Winograd has also served as National President of Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility and consulted for many companies\, including Google.

SUMMARY:Film Screening of “Universal Language” moderated by film critic Mashid Bozorgnia
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, April 8\, 2026 \n7:00 PM\, Carpenter Hall at Sunset Center\, Carmel\n\nCommunity Night with the Library\n\nThe Carmel Public Library Foundation presents The Power of Language\n\nFilm Screening of “Universal Language” moderated by film critic Mashid Bozorgnia\n\nJoin us for a thought-provoking evening featuring Universal Language\, an absurdist and visually inventive film by acclaimed Canadian director Matthew Rankin. Set in a surreal version of Winnipeg where Persian and French have replaced English\, the film weaves together three loosely connected stories that explore identity\, displacement\, and the strange power of communication. With its blend of deadpan humor\, poetic imagery\, and subtle cultural commentary\, Universal Language challenges audiences to consider how language shapes not just what we say—but how we live\, belong\, and understand one another. Film critic Mashid Bozorgnia will introduce the film and lead a short Q&A session following the screening\, offering insights into Rankin’s distinctive style and the film’s place within global cinema.\n\nMahshid Bozorgnia is a respected film critic and researcher with a career spanning over three decades. She has written for major film magazines in Iran and been a contributor to several cinematic books\, including World Cinema Encyclopedia. As a commentator for VOA and BBC Persian services\, she is known for her influential research on women’s representation in Iranian cinema. She is also the founder of Documentary Voices\, a nonprofit dedicated to documentary filmmaking and social awareness.

SUMMARY:San Antonio Ranch Discovery Hike
DESCRIPTION:The 586-acre San Antonio Ranch is a critical missing property in a larger regionally significant wildlife corridor between the Gabilan Range and Santa Cruz Mountains. The property is a strategic acquisition that would fill a gap between three protected ranches – Rocks Ranch\, Rancho Larios Open Space\, and the Nyland property – to create a 4\,245-acre protected landscape which is essential to the effectiveness of Caltran’s pending San Benito Wildlife Crossing over US Highway 101. \nIf not permanently protected\, the property is highly vulnerable to subdivision into ranchettes\, which would irreversibly fragment habitat and compromise wildlife movement in this already constrained landscape. We must raise $2\,800\,000 to buy the San Antonio Ranch. \nLearn more by joining one of our hikes.   Register at sanbenitolandtrust.org/ranch-days
