SUMMARY:Backyard Series: Strawberries in the Home Garden
DESCRIPTION:Product Details\n\n\nJoin UC Santa Cruz Center for Agroecology Field Site Manager Kirstin Yogg as she covers the fundamental information you need to know to successfully grow and harvest strawberries in the home garden. Beginning in the UCSC Hay Barn\, Kirstin will discuss the brief history and origin of these crops\, their agronomic significance in our area\, their primary cultural requirements\, soil and bed preparation\, and crown varietal selection and sourcing. \nThe group will then walk up to the farm and look at our strawberry production site and have the opportunity to plant crowns in beds we have prepared. We will be using the living plants to illustrate key terminology and plant physiology and discuss seasonal care requirements and the specifics of tending to this productive and long lasting crop. Participants will have the option to bring plants home from the workshop to plant in their own home gardens. \nWhat to Bring: \nGardening gloves\, layered clothing\, sturdy shoes\, and rain gear depending on the weather. This event takes place rain or shine. \nAbout the instructor \nKirstin Yogg has been on staff at the UC Santa Cruz Center for Agroecology since 2015. As the Field Site Manager\, Kirstin is responsible for fruit and vegetable production\, research implementation\, and facilitation of hands-on educational programming on 10 acres of tractor cultivated land at the campus farm. She supervises a strong team of staff and students who work the land to produce food for their peers and experiential learning opportunities for the campus and community. Kirstin has almost 15 years of strawberry growing experience and is excited to share what she has learned along the way tending this delicious yet intensive crop. \nPre-registration is required for this workshop. DESCRIPTION:We are all temporarily not soil ~ Francis D. Hole (soil scientist) \nSoils are the basis of all terrestrial life\, providing a multitude of ecosystem services – services that determine the health of our watersheds and our communities. Come learn about soil health and how building soil health can help us build a healthier society. We will talk about soil health principles and the ecosystem services they provide – from carbon sequestration to water conservation and some of the research being conducted in your backyard on how shifts in our agricultural system could contribute to a healthier watershed. In particular\, we will focus on cover cropping and the importance of this practice for improving water provisioning and quality on the Central Coast of California. \nAfter Dr. Waterhouse’s presentation we will hear from UC Master Gardeners who will provide instruction about how you can conserve and protect soil in your own backyard through cover cropping. All in-person attendees will leave with cover crop seed for 100 square feet of garden space.
