SUMMARY:Al Firdaus Ensemble in concert
DESCRIPTION:Palenke Arts is proud to bring back to Seaside the Al Firdaus Ensemble 2 years after their mesmerizing performance for our community. \nAl Firdaus will be presenting songs from their album Shifa\, which is inspired in the tradition of music therapy used in the medieval Bimaristans (hospitals) established in Al Andalus and across the Islamic world. Patients would be treated in beautiful courtyards with fountains and fragrant plants\, using music with the same maqams (musical modes) that we have used on the songs on our album Shifa\, to restore balance to the sick following the Greek medical system related to the humours. \nTheir songs will also explore the relationship between different musical traditions such as\, Flamenco\, Andalusí\, Syrian\, Celtic and Sudanese\, and these traditions are blended in songs such us Talama Ashku Gharami and Salawatun Tayyibatun. \nWe will also present songs from previous albums including a Morisco song which is from a 16th manuscript found while restoring a house at the the end of the 19th century. The poem from the manuscript was written in Aljamiado which is in old Castilian dialect written in Arabic script. We don’t know how they sang it but adapted the words to a traditional Moroccan melody which fits the metre. Some of the poems that we will be singing were written in the 11th and 12th centuries by Sufi masters from Al Andalus like Ibn Arabi (Murcia)\, Al Shushtari (Guadix\, Granada) and Abu Madyan (Sevilla). We hope that the program will give our audience a taste of the rich and harmonious musical tradition that echoes the beauty of the civilization that produced great monuments such as the Córdoba Mosque and the Alhambra Palace.

SUMMARY:Alka Joshi's Six Days In Bombay Book Launch
DESCRIPTION: Readers\, literary enthusiasts\, and history buffs are invited to the launch of Six Days In Bombay\, the latest novel by globally acclaimed author Alka Joshi on April 29th\, 2025. Hosted by Santa Catalina School in Monterey\, the evening event includes an author talk\, musical performance by Sunkiss’d Mozart\, a book signing\, and refreshments.  \nSix Days in Bombay is Joshi’s first standalone novel since her breakout New York Times bestseller\, The Henna Artist\, and her Jaipur Trilogy. Inspired by the 1930s scandalous Hungarian-Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil\, “India’s Frida Kahlo\,” Joshi wrote Six Days as a tribute to the many extraordinary\, free-spirited\, talented women history has forgotten. “Sher-Gil was the youngest member and only Asian admitted to the prestigious Paris Salon in 1933. She deserves to be a household name as much as Gaughin\, Cezanne or Modigliani.” she says.  \nSet in 1937\, the novel follows Sona\, a young Anglo-Indian nurse\, as she travels from Bombay to Istanbul\, Prague\, Florence\, Paris\, and London to uncover the mystery behind a famous painter’s death. Novelist Kate Quinn calls the book a “sparkling travelogue and a poignant story of self-discovery all in one. Alka Joshi is simply the best!”  \nViolinist Tien-Hsin Cindy Wu and cellist Tanya Tomkins of Sunkiss’d Mozart will perform pieces inspired by Six Days in Bombay. “As an artistic director looking to create deeply moving and enriching experiences for audiences\, I felt an immediate resonance—visually\, culturally\, emotionally\, and philosophically—to Alka’s work\,” Wu said. “Pairing her story with pieces of music it evoked was a natural fit.”  \nHead of School Dr. Barbara Ostos says\, “Joshi’s ability to bridge cultures through creativity and storytelling is impressive. Santa Catalina School is proud to support her and other community members whose mission and vision aligns with that of our school—preparing our diverse student body to lead lives of meaning and purpose.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition - After The Human. After Technology
DESCRIPTION:Today\, as technology increasingly shapes how we see\, think\, and act\, it becomes urgent to ask: what is the role of technology in art? How does technological advancement—particularly artificial intelligence—reshape human society\, ethics\, and historical trajectories? How are visual perception and aesthetic judgment reshaped through technological mediation? What is the evolving role of human imagination within algorithmic systems? And what consequences does this acceleration carry for our environment?\nAfter the Human\, After Technology is a curated exhibition that examines how contemporary artists respond to a world increasingly shaped by technological acceleration. The exhibition brings together artists who approach these questions from different yet interconnected positions. Highlighted artists include David Bowen\, whose work operates at the intersection of art\, technology\, and climate\, transforming real-time environmental data into generative systems that question how technology mediates our relationship with the natural world; David Aston\, whose practice examines the ethical implications of artificial intelligence and predictive technologies and their influence on human society; and Alana Balagot\, whose kinetic and interactive works explore shifts in visual aesthetics by merging classical illusion with contemporary electronic and machinic systems.\nExhibition from Feb 8th – March 8th\, 2026 with opening reception on Feb 8th\, 2026 14:00 – 17:00\nRSVP to 650-796-2421 for private view appointment.
